When you decide to take a trip solo the biggest problem you might face is deciding where to go. You have endless opportunities because no one else is making the decision with you. If you are nervous about your first time traveling alone you will probably want to go to a place that is relatively safe and easy to get around. We put together a list of some of our top destinations for first time solo travelers to ensure your trip is nothing short of amazing!
Ireland
Ireland is a great place for the newbie solo traveler. The landscapes are breathtaking, the locals are friendly and the nights are filled with a lot of “craic” (the Irish term for fun). Ireland is also notorious for having amazing tour operators. So, if you are not comfortable with renting your own car or going from place to place on your own terms hop on a tour. Tours are also a great way to meet other solo travelers. Two popular tour operators for young people are Paddywaggon and Shamrockers.
Singapore
If it’s your first time traveling to Asia, Singapore is the perfect place to start. It is a super clean, modern and safe country which makes it perfect for traveling alone. Additionally, the public transportation system is easy to follow and is also very affordable. The city has a futuristic vibe with unique architectural structures and cool museums. It is also filled with cultural influence from the surrounding Asian countries and has some of the best food in the world.
Thailand
Thailand is another top destination for solo travel and backpacking. The northern city of Chiang Mai is a great place to explore alone. The city is on the smaller side and is not as hectic as other Thai cities such as Bangkok but it is still packed with tons of sights and activities. If you are feeling adventurous you can rent a motorbike for as little as 6 dollars a day and explore the countryside outside of the city. The locals there are friendly and a lot of people speak basic English.
Oceania
If you plan on heading down under you might as well hit all of Oceania. Almost everywhere in Australia and New Zealand are perfect for the solo traveler. It is easy to rent a car or van and just drive around. If you are looking for a great city in Australia, take a look at Melbourne. It is an artsy city with fascinating street art. Additionally, brunch is big in Melbourne and you can expect a long wait at all the best restaurants on the weekend. Being a party of 1 has the added perks of being able to be seated almost right away.
Denmark
Denmark is rated one of the happiest countries in the world so why wouldn’t you take the opportunity to take a break from your busy life and give yourself some “me time” in Copenhagen. Rent a bike and get lost in the colorful streets or have a picnic in Freetown Christiania to experience live music and art.
Iceland
If you’re looking for a European getaway and love adventure and the outdoors Iceland is a perfect destination. Flights to Iceland from New York or Boston are shorter than flights to Los Angeles or San Francisco and sometimes cheaper too! Iceland is another country with a variety of great multi-day or single day tour options. Reykjavik, the capital city, is the perfect starting point for any day tour.
There are so many amazing destinations to choose from but we hope this has provided you with some inspiration for your next solo adventure!
