The Ultimate List of Outdoor Adventures in the Northern Territory

northern territory adventure

Australia’s Northern Territory is not just a place you see, it’s a place you do. The heart of Australia’s outback is much more than a wide open desert, it’s adventure territory. Plunge into swimming holes, kayak through massive gorges, hike to epic escarpments and quad through the red open roads. The “NT” is all about embracing and enjoying the great outdoors.

Pack your backpacks and get ready for a one-of-a-kind experience in the Australian Outback.

Experience Uluru.

See Australia’s most iconic landmark from every angle – by foot, double-decker bus, bicycle, on the back of a Harley or from the air. If you’re feeling especially adventurous, you can even skydive for a real bird’s eye view of this spectacular landscape. No matter which you choose, the view of Uluru will not disappoint, particularly at sunrise or sunset.

Explore Kakadu National Park.

Any trip to the Australian Outback would be incomplete without a visit to Kakadu National Park. Hike all day, go swimming under waterfalls, or take a river cruise and spot wildlife: Kakadu National Park has it all. The only problem will be deciding where to begin. We recommend making a trip out to Gunlom Falls, complete with a hidden pool perfect for swimming at the top of the falls. Kakadu National Park also has one of the world’s greatest concentrations of rock art sites with some paintings up to 20,000 years old.  Take a trip out to Ubirr and Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) to see some of the world’s most incredible ancient rock art.

Quad the Wide Open Roads.

If you want to cover a lot of ground as quickly as possible without sacrificing any of the Northern Territory’s incredible views, take an ATV tour through the outback! Alice Springs is the perfect base camp for quadding through the vast open desert. From there you can explore historic sites, like the NT’s first cattle station to natural wonders like the MacDonnell ranges. Or hit the road on a quad safari adventure that takes you rolling over red sand dunes and spotting local wildlife in the bush at Kings Creek Station.

Take the Ultimate Adventure Tour.

Start off with an awe-inspiring view of the capital city of Darwin in a small fixed wing aircraft with the Outback Floatplane tour. Flying out to the remote wetlands, you can spot water buffalos and large termite mounds from above. Then—they’re called floatplanes for a reason—you’ll land in a remote river ready to cruise around in an airboat and spot some crocodiles, aka “salties”, for the ultimate outback experience.

Imagine a single tour where you can combine a scenic floatplane experience, a river cruise, a heart-pumping airboat ride, and an awe-inspiring helicopter flight, all in the one outing. You won’t find anything like this anywhere else in the world.

Canoe down the Katherine River Gorges.

There’s no better way to fully experience the beauty of Nitmiluk Katherine Gorge than from the water. Hire a canoe or join an organized tour to explore all 13 gorges. See the sheer cliffs, sandy beaches and Aboriginal rock paintings up close! Catch a canoe tour during sunrise or sunset for the best views. Get your exercise in for the day while seeing some of the most magical places in the Northern Territory.

Swim in waterfalls in Litchfield National Park.

Everyone knows what they say: don’t go chasing waterfalls. But, seriously, when they look like this, how can you resist? Litchfield National Park is Mother Nature at her finest. Choose your adventure by going on a long or short hike into one of the many pristine waterfall pools. Cool off with a swim in the plunge pool below the permanent spring-fed Florence Falls or wade through the rock pools at Buley Rockhole.
