With news of Europe reopening to US tourists soon, we’re starting to get excited about all the places in Europe we might be able to visit again soon. Of course, we’ve got some favorites on our mind, like Paris and Madrid, but also some smaller, off-the-beaten-path gems on our bucket list too. Need some inspiration for your own bucket list? 1. Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona is one of the most popular cities in Europe for students, and once you visit, you’ll see why! It’s home to a rich history and culture, but also a bustling and energetic city and nightlife. Tapas are plentiful, dinner and drinks run late into the evening, the beaches are beautiful and there’s an endless amount of things to see and do. Plus, it’s easy to take weekend trips from Barcelona to other beautiful European cities like Valencia, Girona or islands like Ibiza and Mallorca.

2. Vienna, Austria
Vienna is one of Europe’s artistic and cultural hubs, but it’s much less touristed than cities like Paris and Rome. This makes it the perfect destination for a post-pandemic vacation. It has all the charm you’d hope for in a European city getaway! Explore dozens of palaces throughout the city, spend a night at the Opera, visit one of the museums in the MuseumsQuartier or shop for some delicious local (and cheap!) food at Naschmarkt and enjoy a picnic in one of the city’s parks.

3. Budapest, Hungary
Budapest is an off-the-beaten-path European destination, but it has a lot to offer! Located on the Danube River (the same river Vienna is located on, but 150 miles away), Budapest is home to castles, palaces, fortresses, basilicas, museums, thermal baths and more. Be sure to visit the Fisherman’s Bastion, a stunning fortress with views of the city; the impressive Parliament Building and St. Stephen’s Basilica. When you get tired from walking around, take a break in the gorgeous and relaxing Szechenyi Thermal Baths. It’ll be just what you need at the end of a long day of exploring!

How could a list of beautiful European cities be complete without mentioning Paris? Whether Paris has been on your bucket list forever or you’re convinced it’s overrated, it definitely deserves a visit at least once in your life! The endlessly romantic city has plenty to explore for every kind of traveler. You can also visit some nearby—and much less touristed—cities to explore more of French culture.

5. Porto, Portugal
Porto is often overshadowed by the nearby Lisbon (which is totally amazing!), but honestly keeps Porto feeling quieter and more authentic. This hip, artsy city has long been a favorite off-the-beaten-path destination, but it’s gaining in popularity. That means now is a good time to go, before it gets super crowded! It’s one of the oldest European centers and the charming Old Town is actually a UNESCO World Heritage site. From the delicious food to endless cobblestone streets to explore to riverfront dining, Porto is definitely one of the most beautiful (and affordable!) European cities to visit.

6. Santorini, Greece
Who isn’t dreaming of a trip to Greece right about now? Santorini has some of the most stunning and dramatic scenery in Greece, from white stone buildings climbing up the island’s hills to unreal sunsets to black sand beaches. Although Santorini isn’t the most budget-friendly destination, it’s cheaper than other Greek islands, and it’s totally worth the trip! Besides, you can’t deny it’s definitely one of the most unique and beautiful cities in Europe.

7. Copenhagen, Denmark
Copenhagen is a popular spot among students, as a very youthful city with tons of cafes, museums, festivals and—most importantly—student discounts! The city is very compact, making it easy to get around by walking, biking or public transit. It’s a hip city while still offering plenty of places to slow down and chill. The city is modern while still holding on a classic European feel. And it has plenty of universities, student programs and career opportunities for international students, in case you want to make your relationship with Copenhagen a long-term thing. But whether you stay for a short or a long time, you’ll definitely fall in love with Copenhagen.

8. Venice, Italy
If Venice isn’t on your bucket list, then honestly, what are you even doing? Wandering through canal-lined streets, eating delicious food in outdoor cafes and maybe even riding a gondola is the perfect way to spend a day (or a weekend). This romantic city is typically quite crowded with tourists. However, visiting during off-season (October-February) will give you plenty of quiet streets for yourself.

9. Dubrovnik, Croatia
Dubrovnik burst into popularity after it became the backdrop for many iconic Game of Thrones scenes (remember King’s Landing?) The historical city is definitely worth wandering through. There’s tons of hidden gems and cafes to explore, even if you’re not a Game of Thrones fan. Plus, you can walk around the perimeter of the city and get a bird’s eye view from the Walls of Dubrovnik, a stone fortress surrounding the Old Town. For even more views, hike or take a cable car up to Srd, a mountain just behind the city with views of the entire city plus stunning sunsets.

10. Bern, Switzerland
Bern is easily one of the most beautiful European cities. The capital of Switzerland is full of medieval architecture, plenty to explore, and a beautiful spot right along the Aare river. From churches and museums to parks and cafes, there’s plenty to do and enjoy. Even so, many travelers say exploring the medieval Old City center is their favorite. Nearby alpine mountains, lakes and trails make the perfect hiking (or skiing, in the winter) excursion too!

Prague is another favorite student destination in Europe, as it’s a bit cheaper to visit than other well-known cities. It’s historic Old Town, beautiful Gothic architecture and delicious food make it an easy must on your Europe bucket list. Even if all you do is wander through the cobblestone streets, it’s be easy to fall in love with this beautiful European city!

12. Bruges, Belgium
Bruges is another off-the-beaten-path destination in Europe, but it’s definitely one of the most beautiful European cities! This super underrated city in Belgium is full of canals, cobblestone streets, colorful cafes and medieval buildings. It’s super charming and will easily make you feel as though you’ve stepped back in time—or into a fairytale. Either way, we can’t wait to get back to exploring Bruges’ medieval streets and cathedrals, eating Belgian waffles and taking boat trips down the many canals.

13. Rome, Italy
Who isn’t ready to get back to Italy? We all are, of course, and as the old saying goes, all roads lead to Rome. This endlessly iconic city has so much to see and do. You could literally spend months there without running out of things to see! From iconic sights like the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and the Vatican to lesser-known sights like the Baths of Caracalla, underground churches at the Basilica di San Clemente and catacombs, there’s a LOT to do in Rome. Plus, there’s no doubt it’s one of the most beautiful European cities!

Besides the delicious German food, there’s plenty to explore: from castles to museums and churches to just exploring ancient city streets and shopping in local markets. For a quieter, authentic European experience, Nuremberg is one of the most beautiful European cities to explore!
