10 Things to Do in Bali, Indonesia

Have you ever wanted to take a tropical vacation to a far away land? Beautiful beaches, surf towns with a laid back vibe, vibrant local culture, exotic new foods, all on a student’s budget? Well, Bali is right for you.

Here are 10 things to do in Bali, Indonesia….

1. Climb a Volcano (Mt Batur/Mt Agung)

Bali is home to two very beautiful and accessible volcanoes. Sunrise treks can be organized from almost anywhere on the island. Opt for an excursion that includes a trek around the crater rim if you want the full volcano experience. I would recommend Mt Batur over Mt Agung. Batur is easier to climb, located next to a beautiful lake, and is more popular with tourists. Mt Agung is taller and much more challenging, however less popular with tourists.

2. Surf Bali waves!

Bali is a legendary surf destination! There are plenty of places to surf for every skill level. Most beginners prefer Kuta/Semyinak as the waves are more forgiving. If you can ride a heavier wave check out Canggu or Uluwatu. Board rentals and lessons are available all over.

3. Practice yoga in Ubud

Don’t miss your chance to bliss out in the enchanting Ubud. Ubud is the healing center of the world; home to countless healthy restaurants and several choice yoga studios. Start your day with a 90 minute vinyasa flow, drink some homemade kombucha and a shot of wheat grass, and then get a massage before your raw vegan lasagna dinner.

4. Attend a festival (Bali spirit fest/writers festival)

Seems like Indonesia’s only Hindu island (Bali) has a different festival every week! If you’re seeking a unique cultural experience, ask the locals what events are coming up. There are also two annual festivals in Ubud that are worth mentioning…. Bali Spirit Fest is your all encompassing yoga and healing festival. Ubud Readers and Writers Festival focuses on spreading stories and big ideas to change the world.

5. Explore the Rice Terraces

Have you ever Google imaged “Bali?” Surely the massive rice terraces will come up. There are several to choose from however most people head to Tegallalang Rice Terraces just North of Ubud. You can grab lunch and enjoy the view or take a hike around to get a closer look. We met this funny local woman while walking around the rice terraces.

6. Rent a motorbike

Exploring Bali on a motorbike is perfect way to spend a day. With the freedom of your own transportation you never know where your day will take you. Most people hunt down a nearby waterfall, explore a tiny village, or check out a secret beach. However if you drive by something that catches your eye, why not pull over and see what happens? Don’t forget your helmet and rain jacket!

7. Give back to the local community

If you’re looking to give back while on your holiday, there are tons of volunteer opportunities in Bali. Another great option is to give back at the Green School which is an eco-friendly alternative International school.

8. Sekumpul Waterfalls

Stunning natural beauty can be found all over Bali. If you want to get your nature fill, Sekumpul Waterfalls will do just that. You can visit with a guide/driver or explore on your own. The falls make a great stop on your motorbike day. Reminder: you must hike in a ways to visit the waterfalls.

9. Scuba diving (or Snorkeling)

Indonesia is home to some of the best dive sites in the world. There are tons of options on Bali and the nearby islands of Lombok, Flores, and Komodo. On Bali, Menjangen Island, Amed, and the USAT Liberty Shipwrecks are all very popular.

10. Eat Babi Guling

Bali’s answer to good old fashioned BBQ. Enjoy a full roasted pig covered in a delicious seasoning. The Balinese eat almost every part of the pig. To get the full experience make sure you order a “mixed plate” when you order. Ask locals to find a nice traditional Babi Guling.
