The UK has introduced a new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system with will apply to visitors from countries that currently do not require a visa to visit the UK for short stays (i.e., for tourism, business, or short-term study). This replaces the old UK travel visa waiver system. If you have upcoming plans to visit the UK, keep reading to see how this will affect you:

1. What is an ETA?

The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a travel permit that will be required for travelers from visa-exempt countries (such as the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, and many others) before they can enter the UK. It is a digital travel authorization and will be linked to the passport of the traveler.

2. Who will need an ETA?

Nationals from countries that are part of the visa waiver program for short stays (up to six months for tourism or business) will need to apply for an ETA. This includes citizens from countries like:

  • United States
  • Canada
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • Japan
  • European Union countries (with some exceptions for residents of the EU with settled status)
Tower Bridge in London. Visitors now need to get a UK travel visa waiver via the new ETA system.

3. When does the ETA come into effect?

As of November 27, 2024 you can apply for your ETA online here. This UK visa waiver will be required for all travel into the UK from January 8, 2025. This includes all travelers just transiting through the UK!

4. How do you apply for an ETA?

Travelers will apply online through an official government portal. The application process is straightforward, requiring:

  • Personal details (name, passport information, etc.)
  • Travel plans (dates, location, etc.)
  • Security-related questions

The process is generally quick. Approvals may be granted within a few minutes to a few days.

5. Why was the ETA introduced?

The introduction of the ETA is part of the UK government’s wider efforts to strengthen border security and modernize the immigration system. It also allows the UK to better manage the flow of visitors and gather more information about travelers before they arrive.

6. How long is the ETA valid for?

Once granted, the ETA will be valid for up to two years (or until the passport expires, whichever comes first). This means you can use it for multiple trips to the UK during that period without needing to reapply each time. You can use the ETA for multiple trips of up to 6 months at a time.

7. Do I need a visa if I have an ETA?

No, an ETA is not a visa. It simply authorizes you to travel to the UK for short stays without requiring a full visa. If you’re planning to stay for longer periods or for reasons not covered by the visa waiver (such as work, study, or family visits), you will still need to apply for the appropriate visa.

8. What is the cost of the ETA?

The application for an ETA costs £10.

9. What if my ETA is rejected?

If your application is rejected, you will be told the reason for your rejection. After which, you can reapply.
