So, you’ve got your vaccine—or you’re getting one soon—and you’re ready to plan a vacation ASAP. But where can you go that’s open to US travelers? Or better yet, where can you go that allows vaccinated travelers to visit without quarantine or testing requirements?
Thankfully, more and more countries are allowing vaccinated travelers to visit without restrictions, making travel easier! Mexico
Cancun, Riviera Maya, Los Cabos, Tulum and other popular Mexican destinations reopened to tourists over the summer. While land travel has been prohibited except for essential purposes since March 2020, air travel remains open. In order to visit, you’ll need to:
- Monitor: You may be subject to health screenings and temperature checks upon arrival, and will be asked to quarantine or return home if they are symptomatic.
- At the current time, no testing or quarantine requirements are in place for US citizens. Different Mexican states have different restrictions regarding curfews, masks, and so on.
- Travelers returning to the US from Mexico will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

The Bahamas
Just a three-hour flight from Miami with picture-perfect beaches and crystal-clear waters, the Bahamas are a go-to on many Caribbean bucket lists. Vaccinated travelers need:
- Health Visa: Everyone (vaccinated or not) MUST apply for a Travel Health Visa ($40-$60) which includes a Covid-19 health insurance you must opt-in to.
- Vaccination: Effective from May 1, 2021, travelers who have completed Covid-19 vaccination (with the second dose given at least two weeks prior to arrival) can provide certification of vaccination instead of a Covid test.
- Travelers returning to the US from the Bahamas will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

Belize
Belize reopened to international travelers early in fall 2020. From world-class diving and snorkeling to colorful cities, it’s a great getaway from normal life. Vaccinated travelers need:
- Vaccination: Proof of completed Covid vaccination (with the second dose given at least two weeks prior to arrival).
- Monitor: download a contract tracing app and undergo temperature checks at the airport.
- Stay: book a stay for the duration of your trip at a Gold Standard hotel.
- Travelers returning to the US from Belize will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

Costa Rica
Currently, Costa Rica is a really easy place to travel to for vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers alike. And with nearly unlimited adventures and outdoor activities, it’s a great next-up for your bucket list! Regardless of your vaccine status, you just need to:
- Health form: Fill out an online health form within 48 hours prior to your trip.
- Insurance: Purchase (and provide proof of) travel medical insurance that will cover any Covid-related expenses you might incur during your trip.
- Travelers returning to the US from Costa Rica will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

Ecuador
Ecuador—another destination with incredible weather and diverse rainforests, mountains, deserts and beaches—has recently reopened for international travelers. Vaccinated travelers need:
- Vaccination: Proof of completed Covid vaccination (with the second dose given at least two weeks prior to arrival).
- Health check: Random rapid antigen testing may be conducted at the airport and upon arrival. If the rapid antigen test is positive, the traveler must isolate for ten (10) days.
- Travelers returning to the US from Ecuador will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

El Salvador
If you need another option for lush rainforests and tropical weather, El Salvador has you covered! Vaccinated travelers need:
- Vaccination: Proof of completed Covid vaccination (with the second dose given at least two weeks prior to arrival).
- Travelers returning to the US from El Salvador will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US. Availability of testing in El Salvador can be limited on certain days, so make advance appointments to ensure you’ll have a test in time for your flight home.
Some health screenings may be done at the airport and some inter-state travel is restricted currently as well.

Guatemala
From rainforests and lakes to ancient history, Guatemala is now reopened for international travelers! Travelers who have visited the UK or South Africa in the past 14 days are not permitted to enter. Vaccinated travelers need:
- Vaccination: Proof of completed Covid vaccination (with the second dose given at least two weeks prior to arrival).
- Travelers returning to the US from Guatemala will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

Lebanon
Lebanon may be a little-known tourist destination, but it’s home to incredible history, archeological sites and ancient ruins, outdoor adventures and hiking and more. Visit ancient temples or go for a swim in the Mediterranean Sea, go hiking in the stunning Kadisha Valley or explore one of the many mosques and museums in Beirut. Vaccinated travelers need:
- Vaccine: Fully-vaccinated travelers may present proof of vaccination (completed more than 15 days prior to arrival) instead of a test and quarantine.
- Travelers returning to the US from Lebanon will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

Morocco
Morocco, on Africa’s northern coast, is known for Marrakesh’s medina—a packed, energetic city center that dates back to medieval times with buzzing souks and marketplaces where you can shop for traditional crafts, jewelry, spices and more. Morocco’s stunning blue city of Chefchaouen is also a must-visit! To visit right now, you’ll need:
- Vaccination: Provide a vaccination pass or certificate (aka your CDC vaccine card) proving that you are fully vaccinated (at least two weeks past the final dose of your vaccine).
OR - Test: present a negative PCR test at boarding taken within 48 hours prior to travel.

Can I travel to Europe once I’m vaccinated?
Europe is starting to re-open for vaccinated travelers! As the EU recently announced that it would open to vaccinated travelers this summer, more and more European countries are beginning to waive quarantine requirements and travel restrictions—meaning you can get back to cobblestone streets, European beaches and stunning natural landscapes in no time!
Italy
If Italy has been on your bucket list to visit—either for the first time, or for revisiting—after the pandemic, you’re in luck. Italy has reopened to American travelers, regardless of vaccination status, beginning in May 2021. The land of Venetian canals, Roman monuments, Cinque Terre and more is always worth a visit. - Test: All travelers need to show proof of a negative PCR test taken within 48 hours prior to your flight.
OR - Vaccination: Show proof of completed vaccination finished at least 14 days prior to arrival in Italy. The white CDC vaccine card is an approved way to show your vaccination status.
- Health form: Complete Italy’s health form prior to arrival.

Greece
Greece is on almost everyone’s bucket list, and for good reason! And now, you can finally visit again—the land of Santorini sunsets, Greek islands, ancient ruins in Athens and Greek gyros on every corner awaits you. To visit right now, you’ll need:
- Vaccine: Travelers who are fully vaccinated (received their second Covid-19 vaccine dose at least 14 days prior to arrival in Greece) can show proof of their vaccination status instead of testing or quarantining.
OR - Test: present a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours, or a negative antigen (rapid) test result performed up to 48 hours before arrival in Greece.
- Health form: All travelers will be required to complete a traveler locator form at least 48 hours prior to arrival.
- Health screening: All travelers may be subject to random health screenings and/or rapid Covid-19 tests at the airport.
- Travelers returning to the US from Greece will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

Spain
Spain—the land of tapas, sangrias, history, culture, salsa dancing and more—has reopened to US tourists beginning June 7, 2021. If you can’t decide where to visit, Barcelona is a great spot to start, with a culture-rich city, stunning beaches and energetic nightlife. For something a bit more artistic, Madrid is a fashionable option. Or head to a smaller (but by no means less wonderful) city like Valencia, Seville or Granada. To visit right now, you’ll need:
- Health form: Complete Spain’s health form prior to arrival.
- Travelers returning to the US from Spain will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

Albania
Albania, in the Balkans (near Croatia) offers plenty of beautiful (and non-touristy) beaches, plus inland mountain villages and small, charming cities. Even better, it’s extremely budget-friendly, making it super easy to visit as a student. You’ll get a super unique experience and Instagrammable views for a fraction of the cost of other European cities.
There’s few travel restrictions currently—no testing, vaccination or quarantine required—but there’s health screenings at the airport and you’ll need to follow local guidelines (masks, curfews, etc.).
Travelers returning to the US from North Macedonia will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US. More information on testing availability and requirements can be found on the embassy website.
Austria
Austria is quickly becoming more popular in Europe, with culture-rich and elegant cities like Vienna to charming towns like Salzburg. From mountain views of the Alps to storybook towns and medieval castles, Austria has a lot to explore! From July 1, US travelers can visit Austria with the following:
- Test: Provide proof of a negative PCR test not older than 72 hours from the time of arrival OR a negative rapid test taken within 48 hours prior to arrival.
OR - Vaccination: Provide proof of vaccination completed at least 22 days prior to arrival (heads up: for now, Austria is only recognizing vaccinations for 9 months total from the first vaccination date. So if your first dose was on 5/15/21 and your second was on 6/5/2021, you’d be eligible to enter Austria starting 6/27/2021 and through January 15, 2022.)
- Travelers returning to the US from Austria will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

Belgium
Belgium is a small country in Western Europe known for it’s medieval cities and Renaissance architecture. From ancient cities and cobblestone streets, elegant cities like Brussels or small fairytale towns like Brugges, there’s a lot to explore in Belgium! It’s also a somewhat underrated destination in Europe, so you’ll have less crowds to deal with and more unique experiences to explore! Plus, ever heard of a Belgian waffle? From June 21, US residents are welcome to visit Belgium. To visit right now, you’ll just need:
- Check the US’ status: Belgium keeps a traffic-light system requiring different entry paperwork depending on the epidemiological situation (aka how many Covid cases we have). If the US is orange (as it is at the time of writing) or green, no PCR test is needed.
If the US is red (or has been at any time in the past 14 days), you’ll need to provide a negative PCR test and quarantine for 10 days. You can view the color status of the US here. - Passenger Locator Form: All travelers to Belgium must complete the traveler form within 48 hours of arrival.

Bosnia and Herzegovina
Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of the most beautiful countries in the Balkans—maybe even in Europe!—and yet is hardly visited and much less touristy than other places. From beautiful medieval villages to stunning parks and waterfalls, there’s a lot to explore. To visit, all you need is:
- Test: Provide proof of a negative PCR test not older than 48 hours from the time of arrival if coming from Europe and not older than 72 hours if arriving from other countries (including the United States).
OR - Vaccination:Full vaccination completed 14 days prior to arrival, or a doctor’s certificate of COVID-19 recovery in the period 14 to 180 days prior to arrival.
- Travelers returning to the US from Bosnia will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

Croatia
Croatia used to be relatively unknown, but now is a bucket-list destination for many travelers—and for good reason! From the famous King’s Landing in Dubrovnik to picture-perfect beaches and coastline to adventure and hiking gems like Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia has plenty of natural beauty to take in. To visit right now, you’ll need:
- Test: Travelers must present a negative PCR taken no more than 72 hours or antigen test taken no more than 48 hours prior to arrival in Croatia.
OR - Vaccination: Travelers who have completed Covid vaccination (with the second dose given at least two weeks prior to arrival but no older than 270 days) can provide certification of vaccination instead of a Covid test.

Cyprus
Though you may not have Cyprus on the top of your European bucket list, it’s one of the largest islands in the Mediterranean and is stunningly beautiful. It’s definitely one of the best places in Europe, especially during the warmer months! To visit right now, you’ll need:
- Flight pass: ALL incoming travelers must provide information on testing or vaccination in advance and obtain a Flight Pass within 48 hours before your trip.
- Vaccination: Vaccinated travelers can provide proof of vaccination instead of other requirements. You’ll still need to obtain a Flight Pass prior to travel.
OR - Test: Provide proof of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of boarding your flight to Cyprus. This is based on the US’ current status as an “Orange” country, which is reviewed weekly. You can check the color status here.
OR - Travelers returning to the US from Cyprus will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

Czech Republic
The Czech Republic is most well-known for the beautiful city of Prague, with its castles, Old Town Square and many bridges and beautiful architecture. Whether you stay in Prague or venture out to other beautiful towns, castles and regions in the Czech Republic, there’s plenty to explore if you’re ready to immerse yourself in medieval villages and stunning architecture!
- Test: Travelers must present a negative PCR taken no more than 72 hours or antigen test taken no more than 24 hours prior to arrival in Croatia.
OR - Vaccination: If vaccinated, only a Personal Locator Form (PLF) and negative COVID test is required.
Travelers returning to the US from the Czech Republic will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

Denmark
Denmark is home to one of the most student-friendly cities in Europe—Copenhagen—and as of June 05, 2021, it’s reopened to US travelers (with some restrictions). If you’re ready to plan your visit to the charming Copenhagen, here’s what you’ll need to visit right now:
- Test: Travelers must present a negative PCR taken no more than 72 hours or antigen test taken no more than 24 hours prior to arrival.
OR - Vaccination: Travelers from the US will need to show proof of vaccination (both doses, or one dose of the J&J vaccine, completed at least 14 days prior to arrival in Spain). A vaccine card or certificate of vaccinate in English is accepted.
- Note: The US Embassy strongly recommends that you print out and carry with you a copy of the Danish government guidelines to demonstrate to airline personnel that you are exempt from COVID-related travel restrictions in place.
- Travelers returning to the US from Denmark will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

Germany
Germany is one of the most popular countries in Europe to visit, from progressive cities like Berlin to small villages like Rothenburg-ob-de-Tauber where you can step back in time. Whether you want to experience Germany’s recent or ancient history or just drop in for some bratwurst, Germany makes an amazing destination anytime of year. As of June 20, US travelers can visit Germany with the following:
- Test: Provide proof of a negative PCR test not older than 72 hours from the time of arrival OR a negative rapid test taken within 48 hours prior to arrival.
OR - Vaccination: Provide proof of vaccination completed at least 15 days prior to arrival.
- Travelers returning to the US from Germany will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

Georgia

- Vaccination: Travelers who have completed Covid vaccination (with the second dose given at least two weeks prior to arrival, or the single dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine) can provide certification of vaccination instead of a Covid test.
OR - Test: Unvaccinated travelers from the US can provide a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours prior to arriving in Georgia. On the third day of your trip, you’ll need to take another PCR test (at your expense, about $50).
- Travel form: Complete Georgia’s travel form before arriving.
- Travelers returning to the US from Georgia will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.
Note that Georgia has restrictions on air arrivals: you must arrive directly from the US or another approved country (including your layover, if your flight has one). The approved transit countries can be found here.
Greece

Iceland
Iceland is one of our favorite European destinations, in part because it’s so easy to get to from the US! At just five hours from the East Coast, it’s an easy international destination for a weekend trip—though of course, it’s easy to stay for a lot longer. From stunning waterfalls to the Blue Lagoon to the Northern Lights and epic scenery pretty much everywhere, Iceland offers a whole lot of social distancing and wilderness to explore. To visit, you’ll need:
- Vaccination: Travelers from a non-Schengen country (i.e. the US) need to show proof of completed vaccination before boarding your flight.
- Health form: Complete Iceland’s health form prior to arrival.
- Test: All travelers must show a negative test (PCR or rapid antigen) before boarding an aircraft to Iceland, taken within 72 hours of departure. Self-tests are not accepted.
- Travelers returning to the US from Iceland will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

Ireland
The Emerald Isle is soon easing its restrictions on international travel, including American travelers! If you’ve been wanting a cool, quiet place to jump back into summer travel, Ireland offers plenty of rolling green hills, rainy days, pubs and cafes and castles, museums and more to explore. American travelers will be able to visit beginning July 19. To visit, you’ll need:
- Vaccination: Travelers who have completed Covid vaccination (with the second dose given at least two weeks prior to arrival, or the single dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine) can provide certification of vaccination to bypass the testing and quarantine requirements.
OR - Test: Unvaccinated travelers from the US can provide a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours prior to arriving in Ireland
AND - Quarantine: Self-quarantine for 14 days.
AND - Post-arrival testing: Take a second Covid-19 PCR test five days after arriving. If the result is negative, you may end your self-quarantine.
- Travel form: Complete Ireland’s travel form before arriving.
- Travelers returning to the US from Ireland will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

Luxembourg
Looking for somewhere in Europe to visit all your friends haven’t already been? Luxembourg is a great option. Located in Western Europe near France and Germany, it’s full of castles, palaces and cathedrals, as well as forests and parks. If you want to spend some of your trip in an art-filled city but also have the chance to get out in nature, head to Luxembourg. To visit right now, you’ll need:
- Test: Provide proof of a negative PCR test not older than 72 hours from the time of arrival OR a negative rapid test taken within 48 hours prior to arrival.
OR - Vaccination: Provide proof of vaccination completed at least 14 days prior to arrival.
- Travelers returning to the US from Austria will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

Montenegro
This small coastal European country (near Croatia) is a bit under the radar, but totally beautiful once you’re there! To visit right now, you’ll need to:
- As of July 3, 2021, U.S., Citizens coming from the U.S. can enter Montenegro WITHOUT having a new coronavirus test (SARS-CoV-2) or proof that they were vaccinated.
- Travelers returning to the US from Montenegro will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.
- There are plenty of local guidelines in place regarding masks, curfews, indoor dining and so on.

Netherlands
Is Amsterdam on your bucket list? If so, here’s your chance—starting from June 24, US travelers can visit the Netherlands, with all of their canals and windmills and delicious foods, as long as you have the following:
- Travel form: Travelers coming from a safe region (including, now, the US) do not need to test or quarantine prior to or upon arrival. However, you do need to fill out the health form given to you on the plane or digitally at check-in.
- Travelers returning to the US from the Netherlands will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

North Macedonia
North Macedonia, in Eastern Europe (just north of Turkey) holds a lot of quiet European charm and few travel restrictions currently. You’ll need to follow local guidelines but there’s no testing or quarantine required.
Travelers returning to the US from North Macedonia will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US. More information on testing availability and requirements can be found on the embassy website.
Slovenia
Slovenia, a small country in the Balkans between Croatia and Austria, flies under the radar but has a wealth of beautiful cities and natural wonders! Lake Bled is one of the most famous destinations, but the ancient cities, castles, mountains and lakes scattered throughout the country bring plenty of European charm no matter where you go. To visit, you need:
- Vaccination: Travelers who have completed Covid vaccination (with the second dose given at least two weeks prior to arrival) can provide certification of vaccination to enter Slovenia and forego the otherwise-mandatory quarantine.
OR - Test: provide proof of a negative PCR test taken less than 72 hours or a negative antigen test taken less than 48 hours prior to arrival.
- Travelers returning to the US from Slovenia will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

Switzerland
Switzerland is famous for the incredible Swiss alps, cheese and chocolate—so it’s pretty much a must on anyone’s bucket list. Head there for skiing or hiking or just some delicious cheese fondue in a pretty chalet. As of June 28, US travelers can visit Switzerland with the following:
- Test: Provide proof of a negative PCR test not older than 72 hours from the time of arrival OR a negative rapid test taken within 48 hours prior to arrival.
OR - Vaccination: Provide proof of vaccination completed at least 14 days prior to arrival.
- Travel form: All travelers must complete the following entry form before arriving in Switzerland.
- Travelers returning to the US from Switzerland will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

Turkey
Turkey is an incredible travel destination—crossing right between Europe and Asia, it’s a blend of cultures, cuisines and history. To visit right now, you’ll need to:
- Test: Provide proof of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours prior to departure.
OR - Vaccination: Provide proof of official documentation that you have been fully vaccinated for Covid-19 at least 14 days prior to your arrival.
- Health form: Everyone has to fill out an information form within 72 hours prior to arrival.
- Travelers returning to the US from Turkey will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.
Head’s up: there’s health screening at the airports and if you have symptoms, you’ll be tested further and may have to isolate.
