Taiwan might be well-known for its beautiful cities and the blend of modern and traditional in the capital city of Taipei, but there’s a lot of stunning nature to explore too! Once you’ve seen the Taipei 101 and gotten your fill at the night markets downtown, venture out for one of these outdoor adventures in Taiwan!
1. Hike Teapot Mountain.
Climbing Teapot Mountain is a great hike if you’re ready for some scenic views of miles of mountains and endless blue ocean beneath you. The trail for Teapot Mountain starts at the Jinguashi Gold Ecological Museum. Although it’s a lot of uphill walking, the views are unbeatable! If you want more hiking, Taiwan has (literally) hundreds of peaks, so no matter where you are on the island, you can find some incredible hikes.
2. Ride in a hot air balloon.
Not a hiker? Enjoy all the views from the top without the sweatiness of climbing up a mountain with a hot air balloon ride! The East Rift Valley offers balloon rides and experiences for every budget, and it’s a great place to soar over mountains, valleys, lakes and more.
3. Escape to an island.
Taiwan has several smaller islands that are great for outdoor adventures and an escape from the city. Two of our favorites are Green Island and Orchid Island. You can go scuba diving or snorkeling and see tons of fish and coral. Or just relax in a hot springs.
4. Walk up Elephant Mountain.
Elephant Mountain is a great outdoor adventure close to Taipei. It’s really easy to access from the city and it’s just a 20-minute hike to the top. Even if you’re not an avid hiker, this is a must-do! And you’ll have amazing views of the Taipei skyline and the Taipei 101 tower.
5. Go whitewater rafting in Xiuguluan River Canyon.
Ready to get your adrenaline really pumping? There’s no better way than taking a guided whitewater rafting tour down Taiwan’s longest river. If you’re not too busy flying down the rapids, you’ll have time to take in incredible views of the gorges and mountains along the way.
6. Cycle around the entire island.
Seriously? Yes, it’s possible. The “Cycling Route No. 1” allows you to ride your bike pretty much all over Taiwan, and every year we send a few lucky StudentUniverse travelers to do just that! If you’re feeling lucky, keep your eyes peeled for our next chance to win.
7. Go kayaking in Sun Moon Lake.
Taiwan’s largest lake—and the only natural one!—is ideal for an afternoon kayaking trip. It’s also beautiful in the morning during sunrise, if you’re a really early bird. Either way, it’s the perfect way to get out on the water and enjoy one of Taiwan’s most beautiful places.
