Scandinavia—the region in Europe that includes Denmark, Sweden and Norway—has some of the most stunning scenery in the world. 1. Lofoten Islands
If you’ve ever seen a picture of Norway that’s made your jaw actually drop, there’s a pretty good chance that it’s of the Lofoten Islands. Lofoten is an archipelago of islands in Northern Norway that’s known worldwide for it’s dramatic scenery, from massive mountains to fjords to quiet beaches like Haukland and Kvalvika Beach. Head to Lofoten for some serious adventure.
2. Trolltunga
Trolltunga is one of the most famous (and spectacular) places in Norway. Although the hike is quite strenuous (about 17 miles round trip with some serious elevation gain) and can only be completed in the summer months, for avid and prepared adventurers, it’s a must-do. If you’re not up to the summit, there’s plenty to explore in the fjords and waterfalls below in the Hardangerfjord region.
3. Rabjerg Mile
The Rabjerg Mile is actually a giant migrating dune in Denmark. Yup, a migrating dune: the strong winds in the area move the dune east about 50 feet per year. The dune makes for some scenic views that are quite different from what you might expect from Scandinavia—it actually feels pretty otherworldly.
4. Geirangerfjord
This is one of Norway’s most iconic fjords, and it’s not hard to see why. Located north of Bergen, Geirangerfjord is surrounded by lush green mountains, waterfalls and plenty of hiking. 5. Gothenburg Archipelago
The Gothenburg Archipelago is a series of islands in South Sweden. Each of the islands have their own character and flair, all of them have picturesque views, with plenty of walking, swimming, kayaking and other outdoor activities. Some of the islands are even car-free, making them even more peaceful.
6. The Troll Wall, Norway
The tallest vertical rock face in Europe makes for some seriously unreal views. You can chill at the base soaking in the wonder of the wall or take a steep hike to Frokostplassen. The hike is a bit treacherous, so be careful and consider going with a guide. (And leave the route to the very top to the experts!) But as a heads up, the views around here are gorgeous, no matter how much (or little) climbing you do.
7. Mons Klint, Denmark
You’ve heard of the White Cliffs of Dover, now get ready for Mons Klint of Denmark. These white chalk cliffs fall steeply into the ocean, making for some really incredible scenic views. You can get here in less than an hour from Copenhagen, and it makes a perfect day trip with some walking and beaches.
8. Northern Lights
Of course, the Northern lights deserve a category of their own in Scandinavia. There are dozens of good places to watch them from, but obviously the further north you are, the better chance you have of seeing some really dramatic lights. Some favorites places to view the Northern lights are Tromsø, Lofoten, the North Cape and Abisko National Park.
9. Söderåsen National Park
Located in Southern Sweden, Söderåsen National Park is pretty easy to get to and offers scenic views for all skill levels (no mountain climbing experience needed!). The park is filled with forests, lakes and creeks, incredible lookouts and plenty of hiking and picnicking areas.
